During summer 2012 and specifically months of May, June and July, Athens Information Technology will offer internship opportunities in the following research labs:

1. Broadband Wireless and Sensor Networks

B-WiSE lab would like to request one intern in the area of signal processing for wireless networks:

"Signal Processing Techniques for Interference Alignment in Wireless Networks"

The goal of this project is to propose and evaluate comparatively a number of signal processing algorithms for Interference Alignment (IA).  IA is a recent approach of remarkable capacity potential for the case of Multiple Transmitter/Receiver wireless pairs. However, the corresponding transmission / reception techniques are scarce and their analysis is still at embryonic stage. The main goal of this internship will be to perform a survey of the available techniques, compare their performances, make recommendations about their trade-offs
and potentially suggest novel twists.

The project will include the following steps:

1) Literature survey of IA transceiver techniques
2) Performance evaluation of a selected set of techniques for various network settings
3) Proposal of suitable techniques for different wireless environments & network setups
4) Possible modifications / extensions of the chosen techniques

Prerequisites: The candidate should have a basic understanding of digital communication systems, as well as wireless communications, and should be able to perform numerical simulations in Matlab.

2a. High Speed Networks and Optical Communications Lab

Energy consumption in ICT networks is increasing rapidly due to the exponential network growth. Therefore, there is the need for more energy efficient network devices that can sustain high throughput with low power consumption. The energy efficient network devices will result in reducing the overall greenhouse gas emissions of the ICT sector.

The High Speed Networks and Optical Communications is member of the GreenTouch consortium that aims to increase the energy efficiency by a factor of 1,000 in the next 10 years to fundamentally transform global communications and data networks.

The goal of this project is to reduce the energy consumption of the processors used in the core routers through optimum end-to-end resource allocation.  During this project the student will develop new architectures that will be targeting these processors and will evaluate the energy efficiency of the implemented schemes.

Prerequisites: The candidate should have a good understanding of digital design, computer architecture and FPGAs.

2b. High Speed Networks and Optical Communications Lab

"Enabling the Next Generation Fully Flexible Optical Networks"

The topic of flexibility in optical networking has gained significant interest over the last few years.  However, research in this field is still in its investigating phase and a certain number of significant issues remain yet unclear. In the framework of this internship, the interested participant can work on topics like: enabling transmission technologies, network node design aspects, routing and resource optimization algorithms and of course general networking studies on the achievable benefits in cost, power consumption and scalability of such networks.

Logistics:

The internship period will cover the months of May, June and July 2012. The selected interns will have the opportunity to work closely with research group coordinators on specific projects, gain academic, research, and hands-on experience in AIT’s fully-equipped laboratories. Moreover, they  will be exposed to methods of research, become a part of an international student body and develop a network which will be professionally beneficial, all of which put the intern in a more competitive position through increased, strengthened, and enhanced knowledge and skills.

A stipend of 300 euro per month will be offered to each intern.

Accommodation at the AIT dormitory in a shared room (walking distance from AIT http://www.ait.edu.gr/ait_web_site/facilities.jsp) and one daily meal at the AIT restaurant are also covered. Interns will be expected to organize and fund their own travel to and from Greece to take part in this program.

Deadline of applications: March 23rd, 2012

Candidates for the specific groups are requested to send their curriculum vitae along with their request to lbar [ a_t ] ait.edu.gr. All internship requests will be reviewed by the respective group coordinators. Interns will be evaluated and informed about the decision by the end of March. Interns selected will be required to submit the following documents:

• one  Recommendation Letter
• official university transcripts
• a copy of passport (for international applicants)
• a parental declaration stating that the candidate’s parents allow him/her to participate in the 3-month internship in AIT, in Athens, and are aware of the place of his/her residence (with parent’s passport number and signature.) This is required from applicants up to 18 years old.
• an official letter by the candidate’s university, stating that he/she may attend AIT during the three months period.
